String Orchestra

Grades: 9-12
Prerequisite: Previous string instrument course work in middle school, junior high, previous school, community-sponsored string/orchestra ensemble, or private instruction, and audition.
Length of Course: 1 year
Fees: Enrichment Fee - $45/year collected at check-in. Method book purchase required. Instrument rental fee $50/semester for school-owned instruments (this includes all percussion participants). See the payment envelope under FORMS for instructions on paying these fees.

Course content will address string techniques, basic through advanced. The curriculum will be divided into five major areas: detailed examination of performance techniques and styles; mastery of simple to complex rhythmic concepts; enhancement of characteristic tone and performance capabilities on the student’s individual instrument; understanding of musical terminology; and performance of music from the major periods of music (i.e., Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary). The String Orchestra participates in music concerts, festivals, and large and small ensemble contests during the course of the academic year. This course may be taken for an art or elective credit.
